Agreed. It's often said that "housing is healthcare," but that idea rarely shows up in policy. Everything is connected.

Exactly. I do hear it talked about sometimes, but not nearly enough. And especially not in actual policy.

There are many organizations involved with the goal of providing "affordable" housing. Elected officials should get involved. The system demands profits before people.

Yes, and we need a regional housing plan. That puts people first.

I had a recent discussion about all the alternative housing options that used to be available, where single people could rent a room at the Y, or a place like the Lend a Hand, or a boarding house. I know people who've moved to San Francisco or New York, that share apartments with others, finding their housemates in ads. And housing used to be affordable to people who worked in ordinary non professional level jobs.

Definitely. We need to bring back a lot of different housing options. The idea that everyone moves out of the home they grew up in, lives in a 1- or 2-bedroom apartment for a few years, and then buys a starter house (and then a bigger house) is extremely outdated.
